Zen - Japanese restaurant in Subiaco

Saturday night, I dragged my coffee buddy to here and there as his gf was busy with other stuff. Then we ended up in a Japanese restaurant called 'Zen' in Subiaco. I wasn't in the mood for sashimi so I had a bowl of udon and he had a donkatsu dish starting with California sushi rolls.
The sushi roll was naked sushi roll but wrapped with little bit of those reddish fish eggs... I thought.. eeeeeek... but the taste was awesome! It was really fresh and tasty. Then Tonkatsu - it was nicely marinated and deep-fried but not salty... for sure they use fresh clean oil only. My udon - tenpura wasn't good at all.. it was too oily and batter wasn't light enough to be crispy... very disappointed... udon soup wasn't salty enough and it's got no flavor. Hm.. maybe the main chef's day off?? Then again.. if the taste of food is not consistent.. it wouldn't even meet the first criteria for my favorite restaurant! Oh well, I must try Sashimi there to find out if it's worth it.
